Thirteen Links for Writers Researching New York
Thirteen Links for Writers Researching New York City
And yes, there are other similar sites which I’m sure other New Yorkers like more, but these are just a few to help non-New Yorkers get started. If you’re writing about New York, you’d better get your facts straight ’cause you’ll probably be submitting a thing or two to people who actually live here.
1. The NY Craigslist page - click on Rants and Raves, as well as the best of Craigslist).
2. The New Yorker -Nearly every single New Yorker working in publishing reads this magazine; find out why)
3. New York Magazine -which is different from The New Yorker; arts, culture, etc.)
4. Gothamist -daily commentary and photos about NY politics, current events, CHEAP FOOD, random events
5. Urban Baby - check the anonymous messageboards. Because not every mother is thrilled to have a baby, even if you are just “barely getting by on $150,000″ a year.
6. NYPD Rants - You really wanna know what NYPD cops think? (not that they ain’t gonna tell you to your face anyway!)
7. Overheard In New York - Yes. I really hear stuff like this EVERYDAY on the subway. Makes my commute much more interesting
8. Gawker - Because every office drone at work in New York City checks this site at least three times. Every ten minutes.
10. Curbed - How do you get New Yorkers excited and passionate? Start talkin’ real estate. Good up-to-date photos on what various parts of New York City looks like now. Because 1980s “Coming to America” New York, disappeared in the 1990s.
11. New York Hack - The blog (and accompanying photos) of a woman writer turned cabbie
12. Subway Blogger - Share this guy’s commute; he claims to blog as he’s commuting from the subway via blackberry. Still, a pretty accurate depiction on how it is to live life according to the whims of the subway gods.
13. Mr. Babylon - A defunct blog of a teacher at Bronx high school. Blogs date back to 2004, and they stop when he got axed in 2006. Still, GREAT research reading for all those little details. (You know, with all the talk about Kick-Ass heroines in romance and science fiction, why the hell aren’t any of them teachers?)

I live in Indiana so no subways (Overheard in NY) but some of the conversations feel like deja vou. Other ones make me feel like I’m listening to the TV.

I’ve only been to NYC once — airport stop — and it was a nightmare. First time I flew on an airplane, first time I was traveling alone (I was 18), first time I was leaving the country! I’d love to go back, though, if I had company! Great list.

TT 13 Hand Gestures
Yesterday I was walking in New York’s Chinatown when I saw an Italian fellow gesturing madly while he was talking on his cellphone. I wondered Why? No one on the other end could see the gestures. So here are 13 hand gestures I see all the time:
